As we reflect on the amazing public art that has been created by local Santa Barbara artists, we would like to extend an invitation to the community to join the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture, along with all of the generous sponsors, supporters, and advocates of the arts.

To celebrate the end to a wonderful 2018 State of the Art Gallery exhibition, we will be hosting a closing party at Plum Goods Store (909 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA) from 5-7 p.m. with light snacks and refreshments. Hope to see everyone there!

Inspired by Leaves of Grass featured in the 2018 State of the Art Gallery Exhibition  

Join us for a Free Family Art-Making Workshop with artist Pattie Porter Firestone focused on the sculpture Leaves of Grass. Using Walt Whitman’s poem as inspiration, the whole family will use colored strips of card paper to depict nature in three-dimensions. We will simplify the forms we see in nature and illustrate the forces of nature moving in those forms. Come have fun cutting and gluing colored strips of cardboard to create your own work of art.

On Sunday, May 20, artist Luis Velazquez will conduct a Paper Airplane Workshop in collaboration with the Santa Barbara Central Library's Curiosity Lab Program. The event will take place at 2:00 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Central Library, 40 East Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara, CA

Join Santa Barbara Beautiful for a free reception and guided walking tour exploring downtown Santa Barbara’s latest temporary public art sculpture exhibit State of the Art Gallery 2018. Installed in April, the eight interactive sculptures by local artists offer diverse perspectives on our community’s creative spirit, identity and resilience. Funded in part by a Santa Barbara Beautiful Community Grant, the installation spans seven blocks of State Street between Victoria and Cota Streets and marks the first time public sculpture has been exhibited on State Street since 2008.

The tour starts with a free reception at 10 West Gallery located at 10 W. Anapamu Street. Led by local artist, Nathan Snyder, the guided walk begins at approximately 4:15 pm at Patrick Melroy’s sculpture, Public Flag Pole on the west side of State Street near Victoria Street and will end on the same side of the street between Ortega and Cota Streets at Melroy’s work, California Love Locks.

Come out on First Thursday, May 3, 2018 from 5:15-7:00 p.m. to participate in a "Painted Locks" activity, sponsored by The Squire Foundation, at the California Love Locks sculpture located at 535 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA.

The workshop will be ran with the help of Squire Artist, Emily Murray, who has been teaching art for the past thirteen years, both locally and internationally. She puts emphasis on the process of making art while teaching techniques and tapping into the creativity of each individual.

On the evening of Saturday, April 28, Nathan will host a public gathering at his private studio, for the very first time, in the Milpas corridor (910 Philinda Avenue Suite E, Santa Barbara, CA 93103) to offer the community a chance to learn more about his multi-media artistic process.

Artworks by Nathan Snyder and Christopher Mark Brennan will be on display. The show will remain on view for private appointments until June 30, 2018.
