ESTABLISHMENT OF STATE OF THE ART GALLERY (SOAG)

In 1998 the City Council approved the incorporation of a visual art element as part of the State Street Sidewalk Improvements Project. The Council authorized the installation of foundations or “pads” for future temporary art displays at 5 separate locations along State Street north of Carrillo Street.

STATE STREET OUTDOOR SCULPTURE GALLERY PROTOCOL (Adopted by Council Oct. 26, 1999)

These guidelines were proposed to apply to the State Street Sculpture Gallery, on installation pads created in 1999 as part of the State Street Sidewalk Improvement. The first exhibition was projected to install in April of 2000. There were 5 original pads installed in the sidewalk along State Street between Carrillo and Victoria Streets. It was determined that in some instances the front of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art might be used as a 6th site. Currently there are 9 sculpture sites along State Street.

Exhibition in the outdoor gallery will be temporary, but in no instance exceeding 12 months. The Committee agrees to contract with a professional curator or arts professional to select the works for each exhibition and advise on the many related issues, including transportation, contracts, insurance, storage, installation, publicity, etc. With the initiation of this program, the City has created an outstanding opportunity to bring excellent, diverse works of local and international artists into our community for the enjoyment of local residents and visitors to Santa Barbara.
